The building was notably the original location for Red Bank Oyster (established in 1838) as mentioned in James Joyce 'Ulysses'. The premises No.17 Duke Street, was originally constructed in the 1730's, taking the form of the then popular, 'Dutch Billy' style house- a style of architecture that sadly has almost vanished from Dublin City landscape entirely. However, No. 17 Duke Street is an exception, as it has recently been lovingly and beautifully restored while retaining many of its original features.
